As an African mother living in the U.K. with three children, I’ve always been passionate about teaching them my native language, Zulu. But there’s a catch- my husband’s native language is Shona, and I wanted our children to learn and appreciate his language as well. Of course, fluency in English is a must because of where they are born and raised. Unfortunately, parents are often criticised for prioritising this over their African language. It’s not easy, especially in a foreign country with blended families. But we shouldn’t forget to teach our kids our native language in a fun, enjoyable way. I’ve noticed that some parents end up using their language when disciplining or getting angry with their children which makes it seem like a controlling language. Let’s not let that happen: our African language is a beautiful aspect of our heritage.
Living in the U.K., we found it challenging to find resources that were tailored to our multilingual family. That’s when I decided to create my own flashcards for my children to learn and practice basic words in Zulu and later introduced Shona. I believe that it is important for children to learn about their cultural heritage and one way to do that is through language.
It didn’t take me long to realise that other families could benefit from my flashcards as well. That’s when I decided to turn my passion into a product. I launched my own line of Bantu Kulture flashcard products, with Shona being the first released. They are designed specifically for families like ours. Soon, I will be releasing the Zulu flashcards as well.
Flashcards are a great way to engage a child’s curiosity and make the learning process enjoyable.
They are fun and interactive, and can easily capture a child’s attention.
Watching my children play with these flashcards and effortlessly switch between languages is a joy to behold. Not only are they learning and expanding their vocabulary, but they are also gaining a strong connection to their cultural heritage and family roots.
As the child becomes more comfortable with the basics, they can move on to more complex words and phrases.
If you are a multilingual family, like ours, who wants to teach your children multiple languages, these flashcards could be a great resource for you. Whether you speak different languages at home or are simply looking to introduce new languages to your children, my Bantu Kulture flashcards are a fun and educational way to help your kids learn and appreciate different languages and cultures.
Repetition is key when learning a new language, and flashcards make it easy to practice skills on a regular basis.
Overall, I am thrilled that I was able to turn my passion into a product that can help families around the world. It brings me great joy to see other families connecting with their cultural heritage through language, just like we are. The link will take you to our website.
